Come step back in time with us! Our colonial times field trips!

A couple of weeks ago, we traveled to a small working farm in Milton Mills and enjoyed some field trips there. The first one was on clothing construction in the 17 and 1800's. How they did it, what materials they used, how did the industrial revolution change things for their clothing, etc. It was a wonderful afternoon, and the kids all got to try their hand at carding wool, spinning wool, and weaving on a giant loom. Take a peek!

Shelley Howland explains about the clothing construction and what they were made of.

This is her daughter Johanna, and she was wearing period clothing.

Shelley explains about the industrial revolution and the effect it had on the time period.

This is how to card wool!

Here the girls are getting the yarn ready for the size of the weaving loom.

Using a spinning wheel!

Our next trip there was a week later, and we learned how to prepare and cook a complete meal outside like they would have done. We arrived at 9:00 in time to milk the goat, and then prepared the fire, and prepped the veggies and chicken for a country stew, made flat bread cook on the coals, and then enjoyed bread pudding, too! It was a beautiful day, and we all enjoyed ourselves, including Rosie!
Of course milking is old hat to my veteran daughters!

time to stoke the fire for our lunch to cook!

Jon and Edward and Nicole had NEVER milked before!

Chattin' and Choppin' up the stew stuff!

Time to eat, and we were both hungry and cold!

Grace spotted this beautiful cardinal!

Thank you Howland family! It was a treasured time we had at your farm! It was wonderful to finally meet you all! I've been one of your number one fans of your hospitality of home church book!

Oh gosh, how I would have like to have known about this place when we still lived out there. This looks wonderful!
